How to get here

Learn more about how to get to Hälsingland and Gästrikland - Sweden’s most accessible wilderness. We do encourage use of public transport where possible; smooth, efficient, comfortable and reliable.

Please note that due to the current covid-19 pandemic, travelling in general and public transport in particular may be avoided and several transportation companies have cancelled their business for the moment.

Arriving by train or by bus

The East Coast Mainline (Ostkustbanan) extends the entire stretch of the coast from Stockholm, through Arlanda Airport to Gävle, Söderhamn, Hudiksvall and beyond with SJ’s high-speed X3000 trains.
There are regular in-land regional services connecting Stockholm and Arlanda to Gävle, Sandviken, Ockelbo, Bollnäs, Järvsö and Ljusdal along the Northern Mainline (Norra stambanan). Buses in Hälsingland and Gästrikland are modern, comfortable and reliable connecting small communities and villages to larger towns and cities, often perfectly timed with train services. Below are some examples of operating train and bus companies.

X-trafik

X-trafik operates regional buses and trains all over the county of Gävleborg and up to Sundsvall. We recommend that you pay for your ticket in advance via their mobile application.

SJ

SJ operates trains all over Sweden.

Upptåget

Upptåget is the regional train that operates between Uppsala and Gävle and most stations in between.

SGS Bussen

Buses between Hofors-Sandviken-Gävle-Stockholm.

Y-Buss

Y-buss operates long-distance buses, and passes Gävle, Söderhamn, Hudiksvall and Gnarp when travelling to destinations such as Stockholm and Sundsvall.

Härjedalingen

If you wish to travel from Gävle to the western parts of Hälsingland (such as Bollnäs and Ljusdal) or in the opposite direction, the long-distance bus line Härjedalingen might be an option.

Arriving by plane

Stockholm-Arlanda airport is just 140km (1hr30) away by car or train from the southern reaches of Gävleborg close to Gävle, Sandviken and Färnebofjärden National Park. Most train and long-distance bus companies (mentioned above) operate transport to and from Arlanda. If you visit the northern parts of our region, the Sundsvall Airport (Midlanda) is nearby, too.

Arriving by car

The eastern parts of our region are easily reached via the European highway E4. However, if you have the chance, we do recommend you take "the scenic route"; for example, Tidernas Väg is a historical road that runs through the western parts of Gästrikland and Hälsingland, from Gysinge in the south to Hennan in the north. Jungfrukustvägen is another nice route that goes alongside the E4 throughout the region but lets you come closer to many picturesque seaside villages.

As is often the case, a car provides the most flexible transport solutions, making those hard-to-reach areas accessible. Looking for a charging spot for your electric car? Find it here.
